"Calgon, take me awayyyy!" Do you remember that old commercial? A frazzled woman stands there as the phone rings, dog barks, kids scream—and there goes the doorbell! We all need a little getaway from time to time. Before I was old enough to have Calgon moments, I knew the power of story.

The written word is a powerful tool. Like a fire, it can warm or burn. Words can transport us to places we've never traveled. Words let us view the world through someone else's eyes.

"They" say to write what you know. So that's what I've done in contributing to nonfiction books and magazine articles.
